When Nowhere Is Safe
Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?
Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single-handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood-craving he’s been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.
When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. It came highly recommended from Anne from over at Under the Covers Book Blog and I have to say she has not steered me wrong yet. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I’ve never really read Steampunk before, so I wasn’t sure what it would be all about and I’m still not entirely sure what is so different about it besides the mention of clockwork mechanical automations, which isn’t something what would be so out of the ordinary for a paranormal read to begin with, so as far as the steampunk aspect goes it was barely noticeable. The world building is impressive. This new world is a lot to take on and it can at times get overwhelming but in the end you have a complete new world that has been entirely set up for the entire series. This is a historical with a paranormal twist.
I adored Honoria and Blade as a couple, the sexual tension was of the chains. Honoria has been taking care of her siblings for the past 6 months. Her entire world exists to take care of them. She is slowly killing herself to make ends meet, when the call comes. Blade is the Monster of Whitechapel, she thought she needed to escape his notice, she never thought he would end up being her salvation. Blade is intrigued by Honoria from the start. Her pride will be the death of her, but she still keeps on keeping on. Her strength of heart and her beauty keep blade coming back. He knows he wants her he’s just not sure what to do with her. LOL Every time they get near each other the sexual tension is bursting from the pages! It makes things interesting for us readers. I enjoyed watching their romance develop.
As individual characters I loved both Honor and Blade. Honor is a strong character; everything she does is for her siblings. She sacrifices everything for them, her health, her pride and her blood. I can get down with that. She is also very brave and does not shy away from doing what she needs to do, at times it can be heartbreaking. Blade, aw man, I love a bad guy that is actually the good guy. He cannot be seen as weak and the leader of the Rookeries. When the big bad comes to his territory it is up to him to take of it and he does not shy away from his duty. He knows he is on the edge, soon his time will be up and he’ll have to do, what needs to be done. He just wishes he could have met Honor before he got so close to the edge. He wants more than a couple of months with her and his adopted family. A monster to the rest but to his family and Honor they know the good man he is beneath.
This was a great start to this new series. I am looking forward to the rest of the books and have already put a dent in the series. I see good things to come.
